The collective and melancholy Perfume Genius from 2010 has grown into an otherworldly experience that not only rewards weirdness but celebrates it. Slip Away begs that you’ll never hide as you come out into the profound. Perfume Genius this year didn’t just become recognized, their music became infinite.

Daughter is warm to the touch. From the first bellows of the sampled, otherworldly voice the songs transcends into sheer inspiring grace. It is alluring from the very beginning in the way very few electronic tracks can be. It twinkles with radiance right within your grasp to uplift one from total darkness. Its humility like this to be found within Four Tet’s music that makes their music almost therapeutic by nature. Tet’s work is meditative in that it is desired to be momentous and long-lasting. With Daughter, Four Tet is giving birth to something precious. Something to be cherished and protected for it is a track beaming with life. In its own little ways, the song expounds all of the elements that defines his work and redevelops it into their own kin.

Drew Barrymore isn’t a collaborative project between SZA and Drew (she did end up making a cameo in the music video!). However it stands to be the best thing of both of their worlds to come out in 2017. Drew Barrymore is submerged with insecurity and questions of self worth. These moments of raw insecurity reflect back to the actual Drew Barrymore. A flawless actress who starred in constant films in the 90s facing the same turmoil. For Drew Barrymore as a song is blunt and honest with the overcoming odds of knowing the after party is over. Despite the somberness to be found in self doubt, SZA is an inspiration for everyone to watch and listen to. As her first single for her debut record, she plays to her strengths with such personal growth and warmth. What SZA does with Drew Barrymore is that she shows that she too is a flawless artist that deserves to be seen and heard, and fortunately in 2017, she was.

Replica is The xx at their most intangible and elusive. In the attempts to break away from the past and to not repeat the same mistakes of the ones before us, Replica becomes a rushing anthem. It presents a band that has refined their skills to a point where they also live in fear of becoming stagnant. To the band’s fortune with I See You , The xx were far and away from making that mistake. What Replica does is that it expands the trio’s sound to a new promise land. It fills a world with color with haunting rides and lush melodies. Known for their shy introspection, Replica opens a door presenting incredible resilience. Here we have a band that is looking for answers everywhere with their desire except with their perceived sound. They have that part figured out at the least, so they can continue to explore new and brilliant emotional arcs.

Frontline is the perfect melding of everything to come before from Kelela. Its her most evocative and aggressive single yet. The sheer dizzying nature of everything featured in Frontline is a true provider of ecstasy and excitement. It all begins with a mesmerizing spaciness that feels just as ethereal as it does adventurous. Once the pace changes however and that industrial drum comes to kick in, the song intricately turns it up to eleven. Kelela takes control of the narrative and defiantly leaves behind anyone that pulls her back. Its a club anthem that has plenty to give and express with a strong knowing of self worth. Featuring the production once again by Jam City, LMK feels like just a small appetizer in comparison to Frontline. It serves as the perfect opener as it completely explodes at the touch with sensuality and everything that defines Kelela. For an exotic five minutes, Kelela takes charge of everything and everyone.

It Gets More Blue is filled with the tangible wit and compassion that defines Girlpool. Featuring some of the most beautiful and thought out lyrics of the year, It Gets More Blue is both cutting and a delight to listen to. The duo entertains the heart and mind without getting lost on the way. Their palpable ways of expression ring genuine and honest. When the duo breaks through with the chorus they aren’t just being vulnerable, they are letting their heart bleed onto the page. Girlpool like the rest of us, is just coping to their best and most sensitive ability. Despite their best intentions in expression, Girlpool is still here. For us that remains to be nothing more than a blessing.

Blood Under My Belt is perhaps The Drums’ best crafted pop song yet. It is near-obnoxious levels catchy as Jonny Pierce sings with hyperdramatic potency. With their new album, Abysmal Thoughts saw Jonny refining his craft as he wrote and produced every song himself. As a result, he takes the band to the limit with Blood Under My Belt. From the chilling violin to the resilient commitment to make up for past mistakes, the song is a lovestruck tale pleading for forgiveness. Such pleas don’t come across as pedantic but they find conviction in having a purpose with aforesaid humility. The track is striking as a vivid self-portrait with deep intricacies around every corner. Its such irresistible melodies that makes the lovestruck song so lasting. The Drums resonates at their best when in misery and Blood Under My Belt is an absolute delight.

The track floods with equal amounts of celebration and critique towards the culture and heritage of any subject he touches. Nothing is safe from his touch as Kendrick is on all rounds ready to expose the truth of anything that hides its truth from the public. His peerless exploration of identity is just as significant as it feels majestic. If anything remains by the end of DNA. its the message that Kendrick is a king that never misses.

The Bus Song is a luminous reminder of how truly intimate the incredible repertoire of Jay Som is. At 22, Melina Duterte is still figuring things out. What stands nevertheless with her music is the ability to craft abstract and accomplished rock/pop that exceeds the bedroom. The Bus Song by nature is both delicate and crashing in its ability to be assured. When Melina sings about her love for taking the bus, she expresses that it allows her to be whoever she wants to be. There is a profoundness to be found in finding such comfort in the unknown. The multilayered instrumentation is an absolute delight as it builds from a whisper to a tender exhibit of Duterte’s ability to craft a truly excellent song. With their sophomore record this year, Jay Som went beyond their defining origins to make the logical next step. The Bus Song is filled with such transcendent life that you can’t help but feel the need, just like Duterte, to take the bus in the compelling attempt to be whoever you want to be.

Frank Ocean has a knack for expressing the aching beauty and joy of summer. Biking is no different standing as his most free-willed and breezy single yet. Book ended by Jay and Tyler, the three together are at their most loose and free. There’s a unity that stands between the three that seemingly transgresses any need or request for anything else (part of the reason why I prefer it over the solo version). Frank lives by his independence and Biking is no different. Its about the liberating feeling of being free and content with one’s self. Escaping compromise and any haunting hardships of the past, Frank is no longer naive or nervous. The estacity comes to a screeching end with a frenzied looped voice that is truly freeing. As the song ruminates and cycles, Frank Ocean and company have developed a track that is boundless and salivating with triumph.

When broken down to the core as an artist for Sampha there is his celestial voice and then the piano. Sampha is bound to the instrument as his defining feature and pride of his musical career. Its such simplicity that finds itself carried over with (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano. Constructed in an intimate way that truly takes advantage of each defining feature, Sampha doesn’t just live within such simplicity here, he thrives. Process as a collective whole was about finding the beauty within pain and acceptance. The wistfulness that stands is also filled with personal tragedy. Losing his Mom in 2015 and his Dad before, Sampha is no stranger to the painful facts hidden in life. It makes a ballad like (No One Knows Me) truly heartbreaking as he plays from his childhood piano. Such remorse presented within his music is as personal as it is universal. Sampha is an artist embedded with catharsis and a timeless allure. With (No One Knows Me) not only does Sampha set down his roots but he suprasses the heavens.
